Dear members of CEU community,
The Human RightS Initiative, in cooperation with the Provost’s Office, is pleased to invite you to a discussion on:
‘Hate Speech’ and the Limits of Free Speech in a University Community
When: Friday, February 17, 5.30 pm
Where: Auditorium
We invite the CEU Community to follow up on recent discussions on the limits of free speech at the university. The event will provide a platform for all students, faculty and staff to voice their concerns, ask question and express their opinions.
The discussion will be introduced by two brief presentations by Erzsebet Barat -Associate Professor at Gender Studies Department and Peter Molnar - Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Media and Communication Studies.
Peter Molnar will summarize the two main conceptual responses to "hate speech", and address issues like whether the CEU Code of Ethics provides content-based restrictions on “hate speech”, or allows for restrictions only if such speech causes imminent danger.
Erzsebet Barat will talk about "Negotiating the Free Speech versus Equal Treatment Conflict" - exploring the apparent conflict between the entitlement to free speech and the equally important entitlement to personal integrity and personhood.
